"What is Affiliation?"
Affiliation is when two sites affiliate with each other, via Hyperlinking with HTML or JS.
(Click for more information on Hyperlinking.)
Each site owner (or representative), exchanges links and mini-banners, then inputs the information into the site, creating a hyperlink to it.
"...And how does it benefit me..?"
Affiliation benefits you because it gets your site to show up on search engines FASTER!
Which in turn, helps you get more members! ;D
Want to test this theory? Look, we aren't all that big, but when you Google "Overlord's Realm" we're at the top of the page!
And pretty much everything else on the page is OLR related! ;D
"But what are the specifics of affiliating that get my site to show up on search engines?"
Just two little words... Web Crawlers.
A web crawler (also known as a Web spider or Web robot) is a program or automated script which browses the World Wide Web in a methodical, automated manner. Other less frequently used names for Web crawlers are ants, automatic indexers, bots, and worms (Kobayashi and Takeda, 2000).
This process is called Web crawling or spidering. Many sites, in particular search engines, use spidering as a means of providing up-to-date data. Web crawlers are mainly used to create a copy of all the visited pages for later processing by a search engine, that will index the downloaded pages to provide fast searches. Crawlers can also be used for automating maintenance tasks on a Web site, such as checking links or validating HTML code. Also, crawlers can be used to gather specific types of information from Web pages, such as harvesting e-mail addresses (usually for spam).
A Web crawler is one type of bot, or software agent. In general, it starts with a list of URLs to visit, called the seeds. As the crawler visits these URLs, it identifies all the hyperlinks in the page and adds them to the list of URLs to visit, called the crawl frontier. URLs from the frontier are recursively visited according to a set of policies. -Wikipedia Definition
Now, the reason OLR is on Google's search engine, is because of their web crawlers called "Googlebots".
Googlebots are similar to a spambot in the sense that both of them are Web Crawlers, but there is a HUGE difference between what they're for, and how they're used.
A spambot is used for many things. A few of those things are to spam your forum, harvest your E-mail and spam that, etc. Evil little buggers I know...
Now your probably wondering, "Well if googlebots are malicious, then I don't want anything to do with them." Well prepare to change your mind my friend.
A Googlebot is very different in the way it's used. A Googlebot only looks at your forum, and adds it to Google's search engine. They can't cause ANY harm to your forum, and they won't spam you. Since google is a multi-billion dollar company, they have policies, plus they have a reputation to uphold.
"Kay, but what does a bot have to do with affiliating?"
You still don't get it?
A Googlebot is a search bot used by Google. It collects documents from the web to build a searchable index for the Google search engine.
If a webmaster wishes to restrict the information on their site available to a Googlebot, or another well-behaved spider, they can do so by with the appropriate directives in a robots.txt file.
Googlebot has two versions, deepbot and freshbot. Deepbot, the deep crawler, tries to follow every link on the web and download as many pages as it can to the Google indexers. Currently (04 2007), it completes this process about once a month. Freshbot crawls the web looking for fresh content. It visits websites that change frequently, according to how frequently they change.
Googlebot discovers pages by harvesting all of the links on every page it finds. It then follows these links to other web pages. New web pages must be linked to from another known page on the web in order to be crawled and indexed. - Wikipedia Definition
So lets say your affiliating with some BIG forums, that are already on google, and have high activity. After they add you as an affiliate, the very next Googlebot that comes to look at that forum, is going to see your Hyperlink and follow it to your site! Then it will boost your search engine rank.
The Hyperlink that was made on that forum not only flags down Googlebots for you, it also advertises your Mini-Banner to Humans, which see it, click on it, and find your site that way.
It's two birds with one stone!
I hope this helped you, and answered any questions you had about affiliating.
Now get out there and start affiliating your site! ;D
